The story of the white is particularly interesting and the variety of its meanings is often unknown or taken for granted.
During the past, until around 1600, scientists declared that this tone was the tint of the light and that the colors and shades were obtained by addition to white. Later Newton demonstrated that the white was the result of the sum of all the colors displayed in the electromagnetic spectrum.
I consider that the belief that the white is not a color is mistaken. Instead, it is the fusion of all the colors contained in the chromatic circle, without there being a dominating one. The white combines different tones, so by the time you quit a little percentage of colored pigment or adding a quantity of brightness, the result is going to be different.
For this reason, there are lots of white shades and it is important to know them properly. For example, in terms of fashion and style, there is a wide list of white codes, both warm and cool, identified internationally: pure white, white cotton, milky-white, bright white, mat white, snow white, antique white, white smoke, winter white, brilliant white, marshmallow white, linen white, white gold, etc…so it is not neutral as often confused.
These different shades are obtained quitting pigments or adding light. To make an example, the milky-white is characterized by a mayor percentage of yellow color inside, so in terms of chromology this is considered as a warm tone.
In this page I talk about white as it is important in image consulting. If you select the bride service, for example, you may find it useful by the time you will select your bridal dress. In color analysis field, white is considered a color as much as the other ones, like the range of red, blue, greens, etc…Its power is always underestimated. During a visage analysis, the change of the white tone closed to your skin shows you a big difference on your light, even if you think the shades are similar. So many people think that white, just like the black, fits every skin, but this is not the case. Everybody has its own palette of colors according to their temperature.
Not only is understanding how to see them useful in fashion, but it is also important in other artistic field, such as in beauty.
Speaking about myth and curiosities, the white color is not just aesthetically important, but it has also a variety of symbolical meanings in cultures.
In the East the color of the mourning is not black, but the white. It is used in China and Japan.
Since the ancient times, white is connected to the idea of pureness, divinity, freedom, peace, wisdom and innocence.
It is a symbol of extreme care and cleaning, both in the medical and the cosmetic field. That’s why in the developing world wearing white means that people are wealthy, as the care of its brightness is quite difficult and expensive.
In terms of nature, in lots of cultures, it is connected to pureness. For example, as I am fascinated by the lotus flowers and after a wonderful travel to Thailand, I discovered that, in their beliefs, this bloom in white color means the spiritual and the mental perfection. It is used to being represented by eight petals in graphic designs and it brings together the idea of genuineness, of birth and of unspoiled nature, wild and free.
Talking about photography, the use of white consists on one of its bases. The experts always use the light and the whites to take their pictures and for the further editing process. Through the management of the light and the whites’ balance, photographers have the ability to obtain realistic colors.
The power of this color is so strong that it is also extended to the fairytale field and to religions, as a sign of goodness and salvation.
It has a high potencial and we have to respect it.
